Course Recognition
What does course recognition with The Society of Homeopaths mean?
Recognition or accreditation can be linked to academic or professional status.
The Society of Homeopaths aims to preserve the ownership of accrediting education provision within the homeopathy profession. Our role is to evaluate and monitor the quality of an educational programme that prepares for entry to the profession. We aim to signpost providers to pathways of integration into mainstream education as required.
Accreditation processes often involve:
- a self-evaluation
- a course visit or peer review
- a decision by the accrediting body in the form of a report
Our process includes all of these aspects.
Independence
Our process incorporates independence through the recruitment of external professionals. We aim to balance to achieve a balance of representation between practising, registered homeopaths, educationalists, other healthcare professionals and lay members.
Diversity
Some courses are eclectic and person-centred, some more academically inclined. Some put more emphasis on particular approaches than others. Respecting this diversity, the purpose of recognition or accreditation within the profession is to promote and maintain the highest standards of practice, especially in the clinical field.
Level
We encourage courses to operate at a level broadly equivalent to a first degree because we believe this is the appropriate level for autonomous healthcare practitioners in the UK.
Some courses operating at this level have also chosen to obtain validation from mainstream educational establishments. Others are working towards ensuring that their courses offer students a flexible currency which will be recognised by external benchmarks such as Ofqual.
We believe it is important that prospective students can get a clear idea of the course they wish to pursue. They need to know that its provision is recognised by the professional bodies registering homeopaths and also, whether it has currency within a wider educational framework.
